Full Moon at Perigee

August 10, 2014  Full Moon and its closest perigee of the year were reached within the same hour (18:09 UT and 18:00 UT). Perigee is when Moon in its elliptical orbit is at its closest point to Earth. This perigee was 356896 km from Earth.  On August 24th, Moon will be at its furthest distance, apogee (406523 km).

A Full Moon at perigee results in extremely large tides. This is especially noticable in the tides in the Bay of Fundy.   It also produces an exceptionally good  tidal bore effect in the tidal estuaries of the rivers that flow into the upper Bay of Fundy (Minas Basin and  Chignecto Bay).
